All About Visual Schedules: What They Are, How They Work & How To Create One For Your Family

We talk a lot about visual schedules in the realm of ABA therapy, and there’s a reason for that - they work! All children can have a difficult time following through on their daily tasks, but it can be particularly difficult for children with autism or ADHD. These kids thrive on routine and predictability, so creating an easy-to-see guideline for what is supposed to happen and when can go a long way toward making days go by more smoothly.

Why Do Visual Schedules Help?

A visual schedule is helpful in a variety of ways. Your child may have had the same set of expectations every day for years and still struggle with them. Instead of relying on verbal reminders that may get dismissed, a visual schedule provides a more concrete roadmap of the day ahead in a clear, simple way that works for your child. By choosing a method that they can understand and see at any time, it helps lessen stress for everyone while increasing independence and making transitions easier.

Creating A Visual Schedule For Your Family

When you’re creating a visual schedule for your child, be sure to make it your own. For an extra sense of control, let your child help make or decorate it. It doesn’t have to look perfect, it just has to be set up in a way they can clearly see and understand what’s expected.

  1. Start small by first choosing the most challenging time for your household, whether that’s morning, after school, bedtime or anything in between.

  2. List each task in the order it needs to be performed, keeping the directions as simple and to the point as possible.

  3. Determine what format works the best at your home. Some people choose a simple chart that goes on the fridge, while others may go with printable picture cards or a laminated sheet with pictures or icons that can be moved with velcro.

  4. Get creative by incorporating your child’s interests. You can use real photos, clipart or even drawings to convey the message. There is no right or wrong way to create a visual schedule - use your best judgement for what your child will vibe with the best.

  5. Consistency is key, but there is room for flexibility as well. Creating the framework for a consistent routine is the most important aspect, but if you find that a certain area needs improving, it’s okay to adjust as needed. It may also be a good idea to incorporate a “special” section or secondary chart for when a special event or holiday takes place. It’s inevitable that sometimes our days will look different, but giving them the peace of mind of being able to see what is happening and when can make all the difference in the world.

  6. For tricky transitions, consider incorporating a timer into the mix. A kid-friendly timer can make it seem more fun while keeping them on task.

  7. As always, we suggest celebrating success with some form of reinforcement. It doesn’t have to be anything big - a high-five, a hug, a sticker, their choice of bedtime story, etc. The most important thing is that their effort is rewarded!
